Last week we had the chance to attend WeAreDevelopers World Congress 2025 in Berlin: one of the largest developer conferences in Europe, and definitely one of the most vibrant!

👩‍💻 Inspiring Talks

With thousands of developers from all over the world and a massive schedule, the conference was packed with insightful keynotes, live coding sessions, and thought-provoking panels. While not everything was Open Source-centric, there were several talks and tracks that touched on key FOSS principles and community practices.

Among the standout sessions, we captured some particularly compelling talks that dive deep into the heart of modern open source development:

How GitHub Secures Open Source offered valuable insights into protecting the software we all depend on, with real-world examples from the GitHub Security Lab. Their track record speaks volumes: 1,000+ vulnerabilities uncovered and 700+ CVEs credited over four years. The session explored how GitHub enhances the Secure Software Development Life Cycle through AI, improved developer experience, and community collaboration, covering best practices in code scanning, secrets hygiene, and automation.

The debate between open-source and proprietary software sparked fascinating discussions about whether these models are fundamentally at odds or can complement each other. The talk tackled crucial questions about software quality, security, sustainability, and how companies can successfully blend both strategies to maximize value while navigating licensing and community contributions.

Collaboration Quantified brought a data-driven perspective to developer networks, analyzing millions of artifacts from multi-year open source projects. The session connected collaborative patterns with organizational behavior research, offering an evidence-based framework for measuring and improving collaboration: something every developer team can benefit from.

Finally, What Makes Open Source Work went beyond licensing to explore what truly makes open source projects successful in the long term. The discussion covered governance structures, community dynamics, documentation quality, and the various criteria that determine whether a project will thrive beyond just having an open source license.

🌱 A Personal Recharge
Attending a conference like this is always a chance to step out of the routine, recharge your developer batteries, and soak up ideas from other passionate people. Whether it's in a packed auditorium listening to sessions or exploring the expo area, where many companies showcase their tools and offer live demos, these moments spark energy and new perspectives.

🌐 People, People, People

From meeting tool creators you use every day, to chatting with developers building the next big thing, the human side of WeAreDevelopers never disappoints. Conferences are about knowledge, yes, but also about connection. The conversations sparked by these thought-provoking talks often continue long after the sessions end, creating lasting professional relationships and collaborative opportunities.

🧪 What's Next for Schrödinger Hat

Events like WeAreDevelopers are a great reminder of why we love being part of the tech and open source community: they spark new ideas, unexpected connections, and that urge to build and share. The insights from these sessions on security, collaboration, and sustainable open source practices are already influencing how we think about our own projects and community engagement.

We're channeling all this energy into a fresh round of community events this fall: moments to learn, experiment, and grow together.

Keep your eyes open – something cool is coming.

Until then, keep building cool things 🚀
